Medical Council Meeting Draws Support Amid Controversy Over Doctor Punishment

Bangkok: The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Student and People Network for Reform of Thailand (SNRT) are rallying support for the Medical Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow, where a significant decision on the disciplinary actions against three doctors involved in the treatment of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is expected.

According to Thai News Agency, the SNRT, led by Phichit Chaiyamongkol and supported by prominent figures such as Jatuporn Prompan and the Army of Dharma group, organized a march to the Medical Council Secretariat building at the Ministry of Public Health. The procession aimed to bolster morale for the Medical Council ahead of its meeting, which includes an agenda to deliberate on the punishment of the doctors from the Prison Hospital and the Police General Hospital. These doctors are under scrutiny for their involvement in the treatment and subsequent transfer of Thaksin Shinawatra, an action that has faced opposition from Mr. Somsak, who vetoed the initial resolution.

During the march, participants paused at the office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health. Phichit emphasized the purpose of their visit was to fortify the Medical Council’s resolve in maintaining its decision to penalize the doctors. He expressed his objection to the attendance of Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin, the Minister of Public Health, at the meeting, suggesting that his presence might unduly influence the outcome of the vote.

The demonstrators proceeded to the Medical Council building, presenting roses as a gesture of support and displaying placards with messages urging the Council to uphold its integrity and independence.
