Police Commander Investigates 12 Million Baht Found in Condo Garbage Dump

Bangkok: The Commander of Provincial Police Region 1 convened a meeting with four police officers to investigate the origins of 12 million baht discovered in a garbage dump at a condo in the Muang Thong area. Pol. Lt. Gen. Surapol Prembut led the discussions on the investigative approach needed to swiftly determine the source of the substantial sum.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting included various agencies such as the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and the Anti-Corruption Division. They gathered to strategize on investigating the money found in the Muang Thong Thani condo garbage dump. The Commander emphasized the need to verify whether the money belonged to a certain Mr. Thaweewat, from whose room the money was traced. The investigation would also examine whether the funds were transferred into or out of the country, a task that would involve banking institutions.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Surapol stated that the meeting’s objective was to establish investigation guidelines to uncover the facts surrounding the money. Once the facts are ascertained, tasks would be distributed among the relevant units to ensure thorough investigation.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, mentioned that coordination with the Provincial Police Region 1 was crucial to setting the investigation’s direction. The origin of the money, whether claimed legally by Mr. Thaweewat as a lawyer or obtained through illegal means, is under scrutiny. Mr. Thaweewat will need to provide explanations for withdrawing such a large sum of cash and not securing it in a safe. The possibility of connections to known officers in the NACC remains unclear at this stage.
