19 raids on Chinese “grey” businesses in Chiang Mai on Friday

Thai police raided 19 locations, including several foundations, in Chiang Mai today (Friday), which are suspected of being linked to Chinese “grey” businesses and of being involved in facilitating the issuance of visas and work permits for Chinese citizens.

The coordinated raids were based on information provided by Chuwit Kamolvisit, a former MP and former massage parlour tycoon, who has been crusading against what he alleges are Chinese “grey” business activities in the country.

In San Sai district, police and local administration officials searched two foundations, alleged to recruit Chinese nationals to work as volunteers for the foundations and facilitating the issuance of legal documents for them.

Another team searched a marble factory in Mae Wang district. Staff at the factory told the police, however, that there were no Chinese nationals on the premises.

Similar raids were carried out at more than a dozen more locations.

No reports are yet available as to whether the authorities uncovered any illegal activity.

It is reported that Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, will fly to Chiang Mai tomorrow to hold a press conference about the operation today.
