SEOUL, Two South Korean feature films will be screened during this year's Cannes Film Festival, which is scheduled to kick off in the French resort city Tuesday. Ryoo Seung-wan's crime action movie "I, the Executioner" has been selected for the Midnight Screenings section of the festival's 77th edition. A sequel to the mega-hit "Veteran" (2015), the movie centers around a crisis facing the Violent Crimes Investigation Division led by detective Seo Do-cheol (played by Hwang Jung-min). Director Ryoo's invitation to the festival marks his first since his film "Crying Fist" was screened in the Directors' Fortnight section of the festival in 2005. For actor Hwang, this marks his fourth invitation to Cannes following his previous appearances for "A Bittersweet Life" (2005), "The Wailing" (2016) and "The Spy Gone North" (2018). The Midnight Screening section is a noncompetitive segment of the festival that introduces genre films balancing artistic merit and popularity. This section has consistently featured Ko rean films since "Target" in 2014, including last year's "Project Silence." Kim Lyang's documentary film "Walking in the Movie," which explores the life of Kim Dong-ho, the inaugural director of the Busan International Film Festival, will be screened on Thursday as part of Cannes Classics. This marks the first instance of a documentary about a Korean filmmaker being featured in this section, which screens documentaries about classic masterpieces or important figures in film history.
