29 referred to prosecution over alleged involvement in supplying drugs to ex-pro baseball player

Police referred 29 people, including nine incumbent Doosan Bears players, to the prosecution for their alleged involvement in supplying or getting drug prescriptions for former professional baseball player Oh Jae-won, officials said Wednesday. The suspects are accused of using their names to get prescriptions for psychotropic substances, including zolpidem tartrate, and delivering it to Oh, or supplying etomidate, a type of anesthetic, according to police. Among them, 13 were identified as former and current professional baseball players, with nine of them active players for the Doosan Bears. A trainer for the Doosan Bears was also included in the list, officials said. Police also nabbed the head of a hospital in the greater Seoul area who illegally sold a bulk of etomidate to an acquaintance of Oh without due process, and a parent of a pupil at a baseball class run by Oh for getting drug prescriptions for him. Police suspect Oh had started taking drugs in early 2020 when he was still an active player. Oh was indicted with physical detention on charges of illegal drug use and violence in March, and the police have since conducted an investigation to spot those involved in the case.
