Military on track to launch ‘strategic command’ this year

A legislative notice on establishing a new strategic command will be issued Friday, the defense ministry said, paving the way for launching the envisioned military unit tasked with better fending off and responding to evolving North Korean threats. South Korea has been pushing to establish the strategic command to serve as an overarching organ to implement the military's "three-axis" defense system. It will be created by upgrading the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)'s Directorate of Countering Nuclear and Weapons of Mass Destruction. The three-pronged system refers to the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation, an operational plan to incapacitate the North Korean leadership in a major conflict; the Kill Chain preemptive strike platform; and the Korea Air and Missile Defense system. Generals and admirals from the country's Army, Navy and Air Force will take the helm as commander on a rotating basis, according to the relevant decree. Source: Yonhap News Agency
