Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, former Prime Minister and leader of the Democrat Party, has advised the Thai government to clearly articulate its position regarding Cambodia’s alleged violation of the Peace Declaration. He emphasized the importance of preventing the United States from leveraging tariffs to exert pressure on Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit addressed current Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul’s stance on the ongoing US negotiations concerning import tariffs on Thai goods and the complexities along the Thai-Cambodian border. He highlighted a collective agreement on the importance of sovereignty and support for security forces, while stressing the interplay between military strength and diplomacy. Abhisit argued that effective diplomacy can enhance military operations by ensuring international support. He also pointed out the critical role of agreements witnessed by both the United States and the ASEAN Chair.
Abhisit underlined the historical context of US policy, noting how past administrations have used tariffs as a tool for political maneuvering, citing examples involving China and other regional players. He stressed that while Thailand cannot prevent such US policies, it is essential to clarify that these issues are unrelated to the ongoing negotiations.
He further urged the government to prioritize trade discussions, questioning Thailand’s preparedness for imminent negotiations with the US. The framework for cooperation, which includes opening agricultural imports and accepting US inspection standards, has already been established. Abhisit questioned whether the Thai public is informed and whether measures are in place to support those potentially affected.
Abhisit also addressed inconsistencies in news reports regarding US negotiations, suggesting a need to investigate the status of US negotiations with Cambodia. He reiterated the Democrat Party’s stance that Cambodia initiated negotiations, which should influence the US’s perception and actions.
Lastly, Abhisit called on the government to clarify its adherence to the Peace Declaration. He noted that the ASEAN Chair’s belief in Thailand’s compliance suggests that the US’s disapproval may relate to this declaration. He stressed the importance of explaining Thailand’s actions to the Thai public and the international community, especially if Cambodia was the initial violator.
In response to questions on potential US tariff pressures, Abhisit maintained that Thailand is justified in its stance and must effectively communicate this position to the US and pressure violators of agreements.
