Abhisit Vows to Scrutinize Energy Transition Budget Amidst No-Confidence Motion Plans

Hat yai: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, has launched an offensive aimed at scrutinizing the government's energy transition budget. He announced plans to submit a no-confidence motion, emphasizing that the party's 21 MPs are committed to performing their duties diligently to protect public interest.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Abhisit unveiled these plans following a party seminar in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. The Democrat Party has adopted the 'Songrat' technology platform to monitor and scrutinize the transparency of government budget spending. Abhisit stated that preparing for this no-confidence debate is part of the normal legislative process, with the party coordinating closely with other opposition parties, especially on issues of corruption and new government projects involving technology and the 'Innovation Account.'

The Democrat Party leader highlighted concerns over innovation procurement conditions in projects like solar cell systems, which lead to excessively high government purchase prices. The 'Song Rat' platform data indicates that repeated participation by the same companies significantly limits price competition, potentially leading to corruption and loss of state and public benefits.

Mr. Abhisit also addressed a letter from the Department of Local Administration to provincial governors, instructing them to cancel the energy transition project under the 400 billion baht loan decree. While the reason for cancellation remains unclear, the project has been questioned due to the government's lack of a strategic approach in utilizing the borrowed budget for effective energy transition.

Regarding the identification of ministers for the no-confidence motion, the Democrat Party has compiled and analyzed information but has yet to reach a final conclusion. Further consideration will be brought before the Joint Coordinating Committee of the Opposition Parties.

Mr. Abhisit emphasized the party's dedication to diligent work during the 2nd ordinary parliamentary session of 2026, focusing on transparent scrutiny of policies. The party has proposed solutions like reducing energy costs through excise tax cuts, which could prevent government borrowing and allow funds distribution within four months. Additionally, he mentioned the proposal for a land bridge, arguing it could create opportunities for the southern region.

When questioned about specific ministers targeted for the no-confidence debate, Mr. Abhisit stated that while information on some ministers has been gathered, conclusions have not yet been reached, necessitating further discussions within the opposition.
