Academics Advocate for Disneyland Investment in Eastern Economic Corridor

Bangkok: Academics are backing efforts to attract Disneyland to invest in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), arguing that it is a strategic move to boost global tourism and that it would not put Thailand at a disadvantage.

According to Thai News Agency, Somchai Pakphasanwiwat, an independent scholar in economics and politics, considers the idea of bringing a world-class theme park like Disneyland to the EEC as both interesting and strategically appropriate. Although this notion emerged prior to the dissolution of parliament, Pakphasanwiwat insists that any government in power should actively pursue the project with a clear plan. He emphasizes that Thailand has the potential, a suitable location, and sufficient land to accommodate such a project, which would provide significant benefits to the economy and enhance the country’s international image.

The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is equipped with essential infrastructure, including U-Tapao Airport, seaports, and logistics systems, along with connections to Bangkok, other regions of Thailand, and neighboring countries. A key factor in this initiative is the advancement of the high-speed rail project. Concerning the potential impact on local amusement park operators, it is believed that they will not be at a disadvantage if they adopt the right strategies, as Disneyland caters to an international market with a range of customer segments. Options for local operators include forming partnerships or adjusting strategies to create differentiation, rather than engaging in direct competition.
