Bangkok: Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AeroThai) is implementing an air traffic management strategy designed to support the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s four runways, thereby enhancing its capacity as a key aviation hub.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surachai Nuphrom, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Managing Director of AeroThai, disclosed that the organization has conducted an extensive study on air traffic management approaches. This initiative aims to increase Thailand’s capacity to manage the rising volume of flights by leveraging new technologies to boost the efficiency of air traffic services. The study involved examining air and ground traffic management systems in preparation for the inauguration of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s fourth runway. Comparisons were made with Incheon Airport in South Korea and Chongqing Airport in China, which exhibit similar physical characteristics, locations, and air traffic management strategies. The goal is to advance air transportation, bolster national competitiveness, and support the objective of establishing Thailand as a regional aviation hub.
Mr. Surachai highlighted that Suvarnabhumi Airport currently operates three runways, facilitating up to 94 flights per hour. With an average of 1,000 flights per day, this number is anticipated to grow steadily. In line with the Ministry of Transport’s policy, there are plans to extend to four runways to accommodate future increases in flight and passenger volume, potentially raising the airport’s capacity to 134 flights per hour.
Presently, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (ARIT) is examining and preparing air traffic management strategies to support the launch of Suvarnabhumi Airport’s fourth runway. This includes considering factors such as location, topography, flight volume, air and ground traffic density, aircraft path planning, and communication methods between pilots and air traffic control. The objective is to adapt technology to fit Thailand’s environment. This initiative represents a significant advancement in enhancing air traffic management capabilities, improving safety and confidence for passengers and airlines, and generating economic and social benefits for Thailand.
