American Man Arrested for Shoplifting and Attacking Officer in Samphanthawong

Bangkok: A shocking incident unfolded in the Suapa Road area when an American man, identified as Alexander Troy Lopez, was caught shoplifting at a convenience store and subsequently slashed the throat of a police officer who intervened. The incident, which took place at approximately 9:00 AM, was captured on video by a bystander and led to a dramatic sequence of events, culminating in the suspect's arrest.

According to Thai News Agency, the perpetrator was seen committing theft inside the store before fleeing along Yaowarat Road. Convenience store employees and bystanders quickly pursued the suspect, who was visibly armed with a utility knife. The chaos reached a critical point at the Suapa intersection, where Police Lieutenant Prasarn Somkane, a Deputy Traffic Inspector, attempted to intervene. Tragically, during his attempt, his throat was slashed by Lopez, leaving him injured and necessitating immediate medical attention at Central Hospital.

The authorities swiftly responded to the unfolding situation, with Pol. Maj. Gen. Chaikrit Pho-a, Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6, orchestrating a search to track down the assailant. A tip-off led police to discover Lopez hiding near Suan Mali roundabout, where he was apprehended by officers from multiple police stations. The utility knife used in the attack was recovered, and Lopez was taken into custody for further questioning.

During the investigation, it emerged that Lopez, 29, an American citizen, exhibited erratic behavior and provided inconsistent responses. To facilitate communication, officers enlisted the help of a tourist police interpreter fluent in English and Spanish. Preliminary urine tests indicated the presence of methamphetamine, although further blood tests are pending to confirm these findings.

As investigations continue, charges of attempted murder of a police officer on duty and robbery have been levied against Lopez. Additional charges related to drug use are being considered, contingent upon medical confirmation. Authorities are also delving into Lopez's background, his residency status in Thailand, and collecting comprehensive evidence from the crime scene. Witnesses are being interviewed, and CCTV footage is under review to ensure thorough legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant Prasarn's condition is reported to be stable, following prompt medical intervention. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities aim to bring full legal consequences to bear on Lopez for his actions.
