Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul is taking decisive steps to tackle the growing threat of scammers by establishing four specialized agencies dedicated to monitoring and suppressing fraudulent activities. Assets valued at over 20 billion baht have already been seized, underscoring the scale of the issue. Anutin highlighted the importance of intelligence in dismantling scam networks, emphasizing that the government remains proactive and vigilant in countering these threats.
According to Thai News Agency, during a policy visit to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul discussed the need for government support to enhance operational efficiency in combating cybercrime and scams, which have been prioritized on the national agenda. He reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, warning that failure to crack down on scammers could lead to international sanctions and significant damage to Thailand’s reputation as a financial hub.
Anutin also addressed the progress of establishing two committees, directing questions to Mr. Thepsu Bowornchotidara, Secretary-General of the AMLO, for further details. In response to concerns about the opposition’s disclosure of scammers, Anutin assured that the AMLO and the Royal Thai Police are actively overseeing the matter, with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and AMLO president involved in overseeing suspected money laundering activities. A memorandum of understanding has been proposed to facilitate collaboration among the AMLO, the Ministry of Interior, the Royal Thai Police, and the DSI.
The Prime Minister stressed the urgency of taking swift action, with over 20 billion baht already frozen and legal proceedings against perpetrators underway. He acknowledged that the complexity of these cases requires thorough investigation and intelligence gathering before action can be taken. National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch has been reporting on related asset seizures, reinforcing the government’s commitment to staying ahead of criminal activities.
Anutin addressed concerns about scammer gangs in Thailand, urging not to overreact and reiterating the necessity for expedited action due to international pressure. He mentioned discussions with the AMLO’s Secretary-General and the need for artificial intelligence support, highlighting the threat these scams pose to national security. Anutin confirmed that if central budget allocation is required for the implementation of AI support, it will be prioritized.
