Kuala lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his readiness to mediate in the ongoing negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, following recent border conflicts. Anwar engaged in telephone discussions with the leaders of both nations, emphasizing the importance of advancing towards a ceasefire agreement.
According to Thai News Agency, Anwar revealed on Facebook that he had conversations with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The discussions focused on the progress of ending the hostilities that erupted two days ago along their shared border. Anwar highlighted that both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a peaceful resolution, adhering to the terms of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia's dedication to fostering friendship and facilitating a ceasefire between the neighboring countries. He expressed Malaysia's willingness to mediate in new negotiations, aiming to establish lasting peace. Both Prime Ministers Anutin and Hun Sen reportedly appreciated Malaysia's proactive role, acknowledging its position as the ASEAN Chair and as a regional ally committed to peace.
Anwar concluded by urging Thailand and Cambodia to exhibit determination and courage in restoring stability along their borders, ensuring the safety of their citizens and securing enduring peace in the region.
