Bangkok: Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian Prime Minister and Chair of ASEAN, recently engaged in discussions with US President Donald Trump, reaffirming that the suspension of Thailand’s declaration will not be a topic in the ongoing trade tariff negotiations between Thailand and the United States.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul shared on social media that Anwar reached out to him, reiterating his conversation with Trump. Trump emphasized the importance of humanitarian demining in the declaration with Cambodia, urging expedited efforts from the Thai government due to the significant risk it poses. Trump also assured Anwar that the suspension of Thailand’s declaration remains excluded from current trade discussions.
Anutin further disclosed that he had sought Anwar’s approval to share this update publicly. Anwar reportedly encouraged Anutin to proceed with the announcement, committing to corroborate through his own channels. Anutin expressed his commitment to transparency with the public.
Additionally, Anutin clarified that a letter from the US Trade Representative about suspending negotiations was issued before his discussion with Trump on November 14th, ensuring that his information is up-to-date.
