Chiang khong: In a brazen act, two armed robbers stormed a gold shop in a well-known shopping mall in Chiang Khong district, Chiang Rai province. They fired a warning shot, grabbed the gold, and fled on a rented motorcycle. The motorcycle was later found abandoned by the Mekong River. Police have launched a manhunt.
According to Thai News Agency, the robbery occurred at approximately 4:00 PM when two male suspects, armed with handguns, targeted the shop. The suspects fired one shot before jumping over the counter and seizing gold jewelry, then quickly fleeing the scene.
The perpetrators used a black Honda Scoopy i motorcycle, license plate 2 KTH 1084 Chiang Rai, as their getaway vehicle. They headed towards Ban Cho Ko before abandoning the motorcycle near the Mekong River, close to the Golden Giant Catfish area. The value of the stolen property is currently under investigation.
In response to the incident, Chiang Rai provincial police have mobilized forces to track down the perpetrators. They are coordinating with security agencies in the area, as well as authorities in Laos and neighboring countries, to intercept the suspects' escape routes.
Initial investigations have revealed that the motorcycle used in the crime was a rental vehicle. Unfortunately, the rental shop did not keep rental documents and there were no CCTV cameras, complicating the investigation. However, authorities are currently working with the rental shop owner to identify the suspected renter in order to track down and arrest the perpetrators.
