Bangkok: The Army Chief of Staff has acknowledged the necessity of revisiting military equipment procurement plans in light of developments along the Thai-Cambodian border. The Chief emphasized the principle of “fixing what can be repaired first” and highlighted the importance of maintaining personnel readiness and morale.
According to Thai News Agency, General Chaiyapruek Duangpraphat, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Army, addressed the Prime Minister’s policy regarding weapon and equipment procurement for the 2027 fiscal year. He stated that the procurement process is driven by perceived threats and various situations. The existing procurement plan is under review due to the evolving situation between Thailand and Cambodia, aiming to ensure that the army remains modern and well-prepared.
General Chaiyaphruek elaborated on the procurement strategy for 2027, mentioning the need to assess the entire system, including long-range and short-range weapons, and personnel-mounted equipment, to identify any deficiencies. The army’s priority is to repair existing equipment wherever possible before making new procurements. This approach aims to maintain modernity and align with current needs through careful deliberation.
In terms of personnel policy, the Army Chief of Staff underscored its significance, noting that it is a priority for both the government and the army. Ensuring personnel readiness, morale, and training capabilities, along with appropriate personal equipment, remains a key focus.
