Kuala lumpur: The ASEAN chairman has expressed approval of the recent ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. Cambodian authorities disclosed that a trilateral meeting is scheduled for tomorrow between the foreign ministers of Thailand, Cambodia, and China in Yunnan province, China. According to Thai News Agency, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, acting as ASEAN Chairman, announced on Facebook his satisfaction with the ceasefire, which was enacted today at noon. The cessation of hostilities and the decision to maintain current troop positions signify a shared understanding of the need for moderation, particularly considering civilian welfare. Anwar highlighted that the joint statement outlines specific measures, including ASEAN observer monitoring and direct communication between defense agencies. Such measures serve as an essential basis for stability, and he expressed hope that both Thailand and Cambodia would adhere to these commitments. As Malaysia prepares to transfer the ASEAN chairm anship to the Philippines on January 1, ASEAN remains committed to supporting efforts that ensure the fulfillment of these commitments, thereby upholding the region's reputation as a peaceful community. Concurrently, Cambodian news websites reported that the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement indicating that Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeo and Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn will convene with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. This trilateral meeting, set from December 18-29 in Yunnan Province, aims to foster constructive dialogue, build trust, mitigate tensions, and restore peace at the Thai-Cambodian border.
