Bangkok: Athletes from Thailand and other nations have raised concerns about delays and inadequate arrangements at the 2026 Asian Games. Reports have surfaced detailing issues with waiting times, accommodation, and food, affecting numerous athletes participating in the games hosted in Japan.
According to Thai News Agency, several Thai athletes, including those from the sepak takraw, badminton, cycling, and teqball teams, have shared their experiences online. Athletes from India and China have also reported similar problems. Notably, Thai badminton players who arrived on Tuesday night experienced a 4-6 hour wait at the airport, while sepak takraw players faced a delay of over 10 hours, with some resorting to sleeping on the floor. Additionally, reports indicate that the food provided at the athletes' accommodations was insufficient, leaving many athletes without adequate nutrition.
Sergeant Major Thanakan Chaiyasombat, a Thai road cyclist, detailed his experience on Facebook, describing a three-hour wait for transportation arranged by the host country. He also noted that athletes from various countries were seen sleeping in the hall while awaiting further arrangements, followed by a 100-kilometer journey to reach their accommodations.
In a recent development, the Thai sepak takraw team has successfully moved into their accommodations on a cruise ship. This resolution comes after discussions between Vice Admiral Apiwat Sriwanthana, the head of the Thai delegation, and the event organizers. The accommodation issues for the Thai athletes have now been addressed, allowing the sepak takraw team to begin their preparations on the cruise ship.
