Huai khwang: The Huai Khwang District Office conducted an inspection of the Rama 9 Data Center following public complaints about a pervasive oil smell in the area. The inspection revealed that no reserve oil was found in the facility's tanks.
According to Thai News Agency, the large data center's construction near Rama 9 Hospital and within an urban community has sparked significant debate concerning its suitability and potential public impact. Mr. Sombat Kreukiritham, Director of Huai Khwang District, led a team from the Environmental and Sanitation Division to assess the situation, focusing on the community's environment, the potential smell of oil, fuel availability for generators, and the electrical system.
Mr. Sombat reported initial discussions with the data center's executives, during which public complaints about a strong oil smell emanating from pipes were addressed. However, preliminary investigations did not detect stored oil in the tanks. The Department of Energy Business is responsible for further examining the oil storage situation.
The electrical system has been assessed in coordination with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, while the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority has checked the water system. The data center company has implemented soundproofing and air conditioning measures to mitigate environmental concerns, including noise, odor, and heat. Despite these measures, the Huai Khwang District Office is committed to a thorough investigation into the potential impacts on residents' health, quality of life, and the environment.
District officials are also monitoring nearby canals and communities for any signs of oil spills or garbage. The establishment of the Rama 9 Data Center required approval from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Public Works, among other agencies.
According to official documents, the center was intended to function as a warehouse, electronic data storage center, and office space, spanning an area of 12,249 square meters. The site comprises several buildings, some designated as electrical system rooms.
