Bangkok: The Bangkok International Film Festival 2026 (BKKIFF 2026) is taking significant strides to elevate Thai film festivals to the international stage, establishing itself as a landmark on the global film calendar. The festival, scheduled from September 13-27, 2026, aims to connect networks and drive sustainable business opportunities within the global film industry.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai Lab Film Association, with support from the Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture, officially launched the BKKIFF 2026. This initiative is a crucial step in embedding the festival on the international film industry calendar, aiming to transform it into more than just a film screening event. It seeks to be a critical platform for connecting filmmakers, their work, and industry networks from Thailand to an international level, fostering collaboration and business development opportunities.
Ms. Sarasanan Arnoporn, Secretary to the Minister of Culture, emphasized the readiness and potential of the Thai film industry to play a role on the international stage. She highlighted the importance of ongoing support and platforms to showcase the creativity, experience, and expertise of Thai filmmakers. The festival not only brings international films to Thai audiences but also presents Thai filmmaking talents to a global audience, building awareness and fostering collaborative opportunities.
Dr. Saran Kovithavanichcha, Festival Director, stated that the festival's return is about defining its role on the global stage. There is a commitment to developing standards for growth and international recognition, aiming for FIAPF A-List accreditation, which would make Thailand the first Southeast Asian country to achieve this. The festival focuses on connecting people in the industry, offering rising stars from Asia the chance to engage with international filmmakers and industry professionals, expanding career opportunities.
Ananda Matthew Everingham, Festival Ambassador, noted the importance of continuity in the festival's growth, emphasizing the need for annual events to build trust and collaboration opportunities. The festival's expansion is driven by cooperation among the government, private sector, and film industry networks, aiming for lasting relationships and systematic development.
Bhumipat Thavornsiri, another Festival Ambassador, reiterated that a strong festival should not only showcase films but also highlight creativity and the work processes behind them.
