Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has mandated the temporary closure of three popular restaurants that failed to meet required safety standards. As part of a proactive disaster prevention effort, intensive inspections are being conducted across all 50 districts.
According to Thai News Agency, the initiative was launched following directives from Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt. The governor instructed officials from all district offices to collaborate with the police in executing these rigorous inspections. The operation focuses on evaluating fire prevention readiness, emergency response capabilities, and verifying compliance with business licenses and building usage under the Building Control Act B.E. 2522 (1979).
The BMA has made it clear that any establishment found lacking in safety standards or compliance will face immediate suspension of services until necessary improvements are made. Recently, officials ordered the closure of establishments in three areas for legal violations. In the Rama 1 area of Pathumwan district, a venue was shut down for operating illegally as a pub without necessary licenses and failing to provide essential fire safety measures.
Similarly, the Charansanitwong area in Bangkok Noi district saw an urgent order for temporary closure due to the venue operating as a public entertainment space without proper permits, posing health hazards and risks to public safety. In the Phetchaburi area of Ratchathewi district, authorities suspended music performances following continued illegal operations despite prior warnings, giving vendors a 7-day ultimatum to comply.
Business owners defying the suspension orders risk penalties under the Public Health Act B.E. 2535 (1992), including up to six months of imprisonment, fines up to 50,000 baht, or both. Continuous violations may incur an additional daily fine of up to 25,000 baht.
The BMA assures that this is a sustained effort aimed at strict law enforcement, enhancing safety standards, and fostering public confidence, rather than a temporary crackdown.
