Bangkok:Governor Chatchart Sittipunt has confirmed that Bangkok is ready to handle heavy rainfall, focusing on water level monitoring and managing at-risk areas.
According to Thai News Agency, following a warning from the Meteorological Department about heavy to very heavy rain from September 23-27, 2026, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been implementing plans to manage rainfall and expedite drainage. High-risk areas, particularly those with a history of flooding such as Senanikom, Phahonyothin 84 Road, and regions along Khlong Lat Phrao, are being closely monitored.
Chatchart emphasized the importance of the drainage system's efficiency, noting that garbage blocking water inlets and drainage grates must be removed. Sanitation officers have been tasked with ensuring these areas remain clear, especially during heavy rainfall.
Water management in Bangkok is divided into handling rainwater within the city and upstream water from the Chao Phraya River. While the current water flow from upstream is manageable, the BMA is coordinating with the Royal Irrigation Department to monitor any changes in water discharge that could impact the city.
The Drainage Department is actively preparing for the rainy season by managing water levels across 1,980 canals, 38 retention ponds, and various drainage infrastructures. They have also mobilized resources, including additional water pumps and monitoring systems, to respond swiftly to potential flooding.
For areas near the Chao Phraya River, 96 pumping stations are in place, with flood protection barriers being monitored. Vulnerable points are reinforced with sandbags and personnel ready to act.
Chatchart mentioned the unpredictability of "rain bombs" and the need to adjust plans based on daily weather conditions. He advised the public to heed official warnings and allow extra travel time during heavy rain.
