Bangkok Prepares for Heavy Rainfall with Enhanced Water Management Strategies

Bangkok:Governor Chatchart Sittipunt has announced that the city is ready to manage the expected heavy rainfall, focusing on separate strategies for rainwater and upstream water. According to Thai News Agency, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is closely monitoring weather forecasts following a warning from the Meteorological Department about heavy rain from September 23-27, 2026. The city is implementing plans to manage water levels and expedite drainage as efficiently as possible. The BMA has been surveying flood-prone areas, especially those with a history of flooding, such as Senanikom, Senanikom 1 Road, Phahonyothin 84 Road, Intra 5 Road, and areas along Khlong Lat Phrao. Governor Chatchart emphasized the importance of maintaining efficient drainage systems and has instructed sanitation officers to keep water channels clear of garbage to prevent blockages during heavy rainfall. The water management plan is divided into managing local rainwater with pumping and drainage systems and upstream water from the Chao Phraya River through flood prevention measures, sluice gates, and pumping stations. Currently, the upstream water flow is manageable at approximately 1,500 cubic meters per second. The BMA will continue to monitor the situation in coordination with the Royal Irrigation Department and other agencies. Bangkok has prepared its drainage infrastructure, including 1,980 canals, 38 retention ponds, and 207 pumping stations, among others, to handle the incoming rainfall. Additional resources such as mobile units, water propulsion units, and weather monitoring systems are in place to support the city's efforts. For areas along the Chao Phraya River, the city has set up 96 pumping stations and is reinforcing flood protection barriers. High-risk areas are being secured with sandbags and personnel to manage any emergencies. Governor Chatchart mentioned that predicting the exact nature and severity of rain, often referred to as "rainbombs," is challenging as it depends on daily weather conditions. T herefore, continuous monitoring of weather forecasts is essential, and adjustments will be made as needed. He also advised the public to heed warnings from authorities and plan extra travel time during periods of heavy rain, especially in previously flooded areas.
