Bangkok: A contractor building a wastewater treatment system in Bangkok Yai has caused cracks in houses and water accumulation, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
According to Thai News Agency, Governor Chatchart Sittipunt inspected the progress of the wastewater collection and treatment system project on Phanichayakan Thonburi Road in Bangkok Yai District. The inspection was in response to complaints from residents about construction-induced damage, including cracked walls and persistent flooding.
The site visit highlighted that the project was based on an outdated design, which is incompatible with the current terrain. The main drainage pipe is buried approximately 6 meters below the bank, and due to the narrowness of the canal, the contractor erected scaffolding that obstructed water flow. This obstruction slowed drainage, leading to flooding during heavy rains and creating mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, the construction has been delayed due to the COVID-19 situation.
Governor Chatchart emphasized the need for immediate reparations for affected residents, instructing the contractor to repair cracked and damaged houses without waiting for project completion. He also called for an increase in the workforce to expedite work on the remaining 28 canals out of a total of 31 in the Bangkok Yai district, aiming to complete the project swiftly.
The flooding issue was further complicated by existing drainage pipes that are only 30 centimeters in diameter, insufficient for the current water volume. However, as the pipes are on private property, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) faces legal limitations in directly funding infrastructure improvements. The BMA plans to coordinate additional assistance measures for the affected residents.
"This project was originally well-intentioned for wastewater treatment, but there are real obstacles in its implementation, including narrow canals, limited access, and its impact on communities. The key now is for Bangkok to prioritize the well-being of those affected, along with managing the drainage system, addressing flooding issues, and controlling mosquito breeding grounds," Governor Chatchart stated.
The inspection was attended by Mr. Wisanu Thrapsompol, Deputy Governor of Bangkok; Mr. Wirach Kongkakhet, Bangkok Metropolitan Council Member for Bangkok Yai District; Mr. Jesada Chantharaprapha, Director of the Drainage Department; contractors; and other relevant parties.
