Bangkok’s Bike Sharing Sees 60% Surge Amid Night Ride Trend

Bangkok:Bangkok's bike-sharing program has experienced a significant increase in usage, with a reported 60% surge in bike-sharing trips within a single month. This rise, amounting to 171,492 rides in October 2026, highlights the growing popularity of cycling as a favored mode of transport among city residents, students, and tourists.

According to Thai News Agency, this increase is attributed to the "Night Ride" trend, where cyclists enjoy evening rides around the city's historic Rattanakosin Island. This phenomenon has become particularly popular among Gen Z, thanks to its viral presence on social media platforms.

The bike-sharing system in Bangkok has become an essential part of the city's transportation network, providing a convenient and environmentally friendly option for short-distance commutes. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) aims to integrate bike-sharing more fully with other public transport systems, such as road, rail, and water networks. The initiative has been notably successful among students from institutions like Suankularb Wittayalai School and Thepsirin School, with plans to reach one million bike trips in the future.

To meet the increasing demand, the bike-sharing network has expanded to over 719 locations across 35 districts, including tourist, economic, and educational areas. Service providers, such as Hello Ride and Anywheel, have also increased the number of bicycles available and improved the frequency of maintenance and replenishment in high-demand areas. The BMA is enhancing infrastructure to accommodate personal bicycles, with plans to install additional parking structures, ensuring safety and accessibility for all cyclists.

Mr. Ekavaranyu Amrapal, advisor to the Governor of Bangkok, emphasized the importance of safety and cultural respect in cycling, encouraging cyclists to adhere to traffic laws and community etiquette. The continued growth of bike-sharing usage is seen as a positive step towards developing a sustainable and connected urban transport system in Bangkok.
