Phnom penh: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has called upon the United States and Malaysia to investigate the origins of gunfire in a recent clash between Cambodia and Thailand. In a statement posted on his Facebook account, Hun Manet emphasized the need for clarity on who initiated the conflict, highlighting his discussions with U.S. President Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
According to Thai News Agency, Hun Manet’s request for an investigation follows ongoing tensions along the disputed Cambodia-Thailand border. Despite President Trump’s announcement of a newly brokered ceasefire, Cambodian officials reported continued attacks by Thai forces, including the use of fighter jets, early on Saturday morning. This escalation occurred just hours after the ceasefire was supposed to take effect.
President Trump had claimed that a complete ceasefire had been agreed upon following phone conversations with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. However, discrepancies arose as neither Hun Manet nor Anutin acknowledged any such agreement in their public statements. Prime Minister Anutin further confirmed that no ceasefire had been implemented, contradicting President Trump’s assertion.
