Toronto: The Canadian government has denied Thomas Partey a visa, leaving the Ghana national team confused as veteran Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey will be ineligible to play in the 2026 World Cup Group L first round match against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17th.
According to Thai News Agency, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) confirmed that Partey has not been allowed to enter Canada because his visa application was rejected by the Canadian government. This is due to his ongoing rape and sexual assault charges, which he is scheduled to face next year.
FIFA also clarified that it is not involved in the immigration process of the host country, including visa approvals. The government of the host country has the sole authority to decide who will receive a visa and be allowed entry into the country.
Despite being unable to play for Ghana in their opening match against Panama in Canada, Partey will still be able to participate in the remaining two games against England on June 23rd and Croatia on June 27th without any issues, as both matches are scheduled to take place in the United States.
