Bangkok: Chatchart is poised to transfer the "Green Line" back to the government, increasing funding for urban maintenance and supporting a unified ticketing system to lower fares.
According to Thai News Agency, on August 3, 2026, Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt revealed the progress in managing the Green Line Skytrain. Following a Cabinet resolution approximately two months ago, Bangkok will transfer all assets and liabilities of the Green Line back to the government. This move aims to facilitate the management of a unified ticketing system and fare structure. If successful, it will reduce Bangkok's financial burden and free up budget for other aspects of public development and service.
The Bangkok Governor noted that there should be no issues with Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTS), as the contract and conditions remain unchanged, except for the transfer of ownership of the assets to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). The current focus is on negotiating the book value and future actual value of the assets. After the concession expires in 2029, 100% of the revenue will belong to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), which necessitates consideration of how the government will compensate the BMA. Outstanding construction debts will also be offset during this process. The final step requires approval from the Bangkok Metropolitan Council due to the large size of the city's assets.
