Chiang Mai Residents Demand Return of Former Governor to Tackle Air Pollution Crisis

Chiang mai: Chiang Mai has had enough! Residents are demanding the return of their former governor to help solve the severe PM2.5 air pollution problem, which is causing nosebleeds among the population. A proposal is being made to learn from Governor Sembei's experience and develop a year-long plan to reduce air pollution in Chiang Mai.

According to Thai News Agency, the PM2.5 air pollution crisis and wildfires in Chiang Mai and other northern provinces are now having a widespread impact on public health. Many vulnerable individuals are experiencing nosebleeds and respiratory problems, leading to criticism of the government's inadequate response and the recent transfer of the provincial governor.

Recently, comments have surfaced asking "Where has the Chiang Mai governor gone?" and calling for the return of the "former governor," Mr. Nirat Pongsitthaworn, or "Governor Sembe." Comments included: "We miss Governor Sembe dearly; he did an excellent job planning and managing forest fires," "Why is the air pollution in Chiang Mai so much worse this year than last year?", and questions about firefighting management, noting that "Governor Sembe" had a track record in fighting forest fires, and comparing statistics from 2024-2025 (where air pollution and forest fires weren't as severe) to 2026.

During his time as Governor of Chiang Mai, Governor Sembe planned and implemented measures to address the dust pollution caused by forest fires and reduce hotspots well in advance of the annual burning season. Key measures included: prohibiting burning by offering incentives to those accustomed to burning crop residue and those foraging in the forest; encouraging them to change their habits through vocational training; and seeking cooperation from farmers in all 25 districts to switch from burning agricultural materials to plowing them back into the soil. The province supported each district with tractors and fuel, as well as providing assistance in making fertilizer from crop residues and transporting rice straw. During heavy burning seasons, strict measures were implemented, with arrests made immediately. A reward of 10,000 baht was offered for information leading to prosecution. Importantly, Governor Sembe gained the respect of the officials working on the ground because he consistently visited the areas t o monitor the situation, even amidst criticism and controversy. These achievements led the people of Chiang Mai to seek out and appreciate Governor Sembe's approach to governance.
