Chiang Mai University Medical Team Manages Rare Identical Quadruplets Pregnancy

Chiang Mai:A team at Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Medicine has successfully managed a rare and high-risk pregnancy involving naturally conceived identical quadruplets. The team supported the mother and her four daughters from pregnancy through delivery and neonatal intensive care.

According to Thai News Agency, the pregnancy involved four identical female babies originating from a single fertilized egg, each developing in separate amniotic sacs but sharing one placenta. The 33-year-old mother, from a remote Pga K'nyau ethnic community, traveled over 200 kilometers for specialized care at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.

The medical team closely monitored the pregnancy, coordinating care with local obstetricians due to the challenges posed by the distance. The mother was admitted to the hospital at 27 weeks of gestation, where she received antenatal corticosteroids to support fetal lung development. At 29 weeks and five days, a cesarean section was performed due to preterm labor.

The four premature girls, weighing between 800 and 1,295 grams, required intensive neonatal care. The team provided respiratory support and nutritional care, gradually weaning them off respiratory assistance as their conditions improved. The babies have since progressed well, with all four now breathing independently and feeding adequately.

The successful outcome is attributed to the meticulous preparation, coordinated efforts of the multidisciplinary teams, and the family's involvement, highlighting the importance of comprehensive maternal and neonatal care in managing complex pregnancies.
