China Advances AI in Commerce with New Guidelines

Accra:The Chinese government has unveiled comprehensive new guidelines to boost the integration of artificial intelligence in the commerce sector. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Commerce alongside other government agencies, includes 18 measures designed to modernize production, retail, logistics, and services, thereby enhancing trade models and consumer experiences.

According to Thai News Agency, these initiatives focus on incorporating AI across various stages of business operations, from product design and development to manufacturing and marketing. They also emphasize the use of smart devices and robots, along with adaptable manufacturing methods that cater to individual customer needs. Additionally, the guidelines advocate for AI applications in healthcare, elderly care, restaurant digitalization, and the cultural and tourism sectors.

In the trade and transportation industries, the guidelines call for the development of smart warehouses, automated logistics, and driverless delivery systems. The digital systems of wholesale and retail businesses are to be upgraded, with AI agents being developed to assist in purchasing, business management, transportation management, and creating virtual shopping experiences. The initiative also includes plans to enhance digital infrastructure, set technology standards, and facilitate funding for AI integration.

This move follows a previous set of 17 guidelines issued in June by the Ministry of Commerce and other agencies, which aimed to promote AI to stimulate consumption, focusing on smart products and AI-powered services. The latest guidelines represent a further expansion of AI's role in economic activities.

Recent data shows that China's retail sales of consumer goods from January to September 2026 reached 37 trillion yuan, marking a 1.1% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, the retail sales of services saw a 5% growth, significantly outperforming the 1% growth in goods sales, highlighting the robust expansion of the services sector.
