Company commanders booked for probe over recruit’s death during training

CHUNCHEON, South Korea, Two Army company commanders have been booked for investigation on charges of professional negligence over the death last month of a recruit following a session of demanding disciplinary training. One trainee soldier collapsed during a disciplinary training session at the boot camp of the 12th Infantry Division in the northeastern county of Inje and died two days later in late May. Six recruits took part in the session. The Army concluded that the soldiers were ordered to run and do push-ups while carrying full combat gear, in violation of regulations, and sent the case to the civilian police for investigation. Officials said Monday that the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency has booked a company commander and a vice commander for investigation on charges of professional negligence resulting in the death of the recruit and abuse of authority, and has summoned them to appear for questioning. The date of questioning remains unknown. The company commander is facing additional suspicions of murder and cruel treatment of recruits raised by a civic group and others, although police appear likely to drop the murder charge if they decide to charge the commander with fatal professional negligence.
