Concrete Awning Collapse Traps Residents in Din Daeng District

Bangkok:A dramatic incident unfolded last night when a concrete awning collapsed on the second floor of a nearly 60-year-old building in Soi Pracha Songkhro 26, Din Daeng district. The collapse occurred at approximately 940 PM, blocking the entrance and exit of the building and trapping residents inside.

According to Thai News Agency, rescue workers quickly responded to the scene and successfully evacuated all individuals trapped inside the building. However, some residents chose to remain inside their homes to protect their belongings despite the collapse.

Residents reported hearing a loud noise resembling something falling violently and discovered that their neighbor's awning had collapsed. Prior to the incident, some had noticed that the concrete awning appeared to be sagging but did not anticipate it would collapse.

In response to the incident, officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Public Works Department utilized machinery to clear the debris. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) also temporarily cut off the power supply as a safety measure during the operation.

Ms. Panisara Netharathorn, Director of Din Daeng District, stated that the building's main structure remains safe based on an initial assessment. While residents are allowed to stay inside, they are not yet permitted to leave the building. The incident has prompted the district office to plan an analysis and survey of other historic buildings in the area to assess risks and prevent future occurrences.
