CPF confirms it is not the source of the ‘Black-chinned Tilapia’ outbreak

CPF clarifies that it has imported black-chinned tilapia since 2010, but has destroyed the fish carcasses according to standards, and has sent samples to the Department of Fisheries since 2011, confirming that it is not the cause of the outbreak. The document that Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) clarified to the government agencies stated that in 2010, the company imported 2,000 fish, which were found to be unhealthy and many died during the journey, leaving only 600 fish that were alive but in a weak condition, which were inspected at the quarantine station by the Department of Fisheries. Because the fish were unhealthy, they continued to die until only 50 remained. The company therefore decided to stop the research on this matter, and destroyed the fish carcasses according to the standards and notified the Department of Fisheries, and sent samples of the fish carcasses, which were all preserved in formalin, to the Department of Fisheries in 2011. In addition, in 2017, when the outbreak of black chin til apia began, a team of inspectors from the Department of Fisheries visited the company's farm in Samut Songkhram Province to request information on the number of black chin tilapia fry imported in 2010 and management, and the company's researchers reported all the facts. Later, the National Human Rights Commission visited the farm again, and the company's researchers explained the method of destroying all the fish, using concentrated chlorine and burying the fish carcasses with lime, and confirmed that this was not the cause of the outbreak. The company would like to certify that it has strictly implemented and complied with the regulations throughout the import and preparation of research samples on the farm before destroying all fish in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Fisheries, including preventing any impacts on the community and the environment in strict accordance with the requirements of the Department of Fisheries' Biodiversity and Safety Committee, and is willing to cooperate in solving the problem and helping alleviate the suffering of the community where the fish outbreak occurred.
