Crane collapse incident: Found that the bolts holding the end of the crane had come loose, causing it to lose control.

onstruction crane collapse incident, Soi On Nut 86, Engineering Association went to the area to initially inspect and found that the bolts holding the end of the crane had come loose, causing it to lose its balance and fall on workers. They are preparing to send information to the Engineering Institute of Thailand to confirm that someone must be held responsible. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, along with his team and officials from Bangkok, went to inspect the construction site where the crane fell on workers in Soi On Nut 86 after about 1 hour. He came out to give an interview that from the initial inspection, it was found that the bolts or nuts in the end parts of the tower crane had come loose from their components, causing the crane to lose its balance. As for other parts, no abnormalities were found from the inspection, but experts will have to come in and inspect them in detail again. It is expected that it will take about 1 month to con clude the real cause. The information will be reported to the Engineering Institute of Thailand under Royal Patronage for consideration. The engineers who designed the tower crane and the crane installer will be invited to provide information on any design or assembly errors. He confirmed that someone will be held responsible for this matter. Regarding the legal case, the Superintendent of Prawet Police Station stated that all relevant persons, including workers, project owners, and contractors, have been invited for questioning, but no charges have been filed against anyone yet because they still have to wait for the structural inspection results from the Engineering Association of Thailand. After that, the investigator will consider filing charges later. From the construction crane collapse incident at Soi On Nut 86, which resulted in 2 deaths and 5 injuries, the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand has concluded 4 initial assumptions. The collapse of the crane is considered a type of continuous failure, meaning that the failure starts at one point and spreads to cause the entire structure to collapse. The initial failure occurred while the crane was lifting the steel bars. During the lifting, it was found that the flat boom arm at the extended end broke in two pieces, which is likely caused by the fastening bolts used to hold the pieces together becoming loose, displaced or broken. Fragments of the fastening bolts were found to have fallen off as well. When the boom arm on the lifting side broke, it caused an imbalance of counterweight between the two sides of the crane frame, causing the arm on the side with the concrete counterweight to pull the crane frame down in the opposite direction, at the same time pulling the boom arm until it flipped over and hit the temporary office building, resulting in deaths. When the crane frame lost its balance, it overturned and pulled the entire concrete foundation until it was separated from the piles. The steel dowels that held the piles together were found broken, which was a failure that caused the instability to overturn Source: Thai News Agency
