Havana: Cuba's national power grid failed for the second time this week, leading to a complete collapse on Friday. This marks the fourth nationwide blackout since the beginning of the year.
According to Thai News Agency, the Cuban Ministry of Energy announced through social media that measures are being implemented to restore the system. UNE, the power grid operator, has commenced efforts to bring electricity back to millions of residents on the island.
This recent outage follows a previous nationwide blackout on Monday, July 6th. Although most of the power grid was restored by Tuesday evening, large areas, including Santiago de Cuba, continue to experience outages due to a severe fuel shortage.
The recurring power failures come in the wake of U.S.-led oil sanctions, which have severely impacted Cuba's aging electricity generation infrastructure, leading to multiple shutdowns. Energy Minister Vicente de la Ol©by communicated via social media that authorities are urgently working to restore the national power system amidst ongoing challenges.
