Bangkok: The Department of Livestock is taking swift action to deliver royal animal feed to livestock farmers impacted by severe flooding in the southern region. The initiative aims to support farmers in nine southern provinces who have been grappling with the effects of floodwaters on their livestock and livelihood.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Livestock Development is mobilizing resources to evacuate animals, distribute grass and feed, and monitor the health of livestock in the affected areas. Following the recession of floodwaters, a thorough damage assessment will be conducted to ensure compensation is provided in line with government regulations. Additionally, a comprehensive rehabilitation plan will be formulated to assist farmers in their recovery efforts.
Dr. Somchuan Rattanamangklanon, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, reported that the department is prioritizing aid to farmers and animals in the nine affected provinces: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Satun, Pattani, Songkhla, Trang, and Narathiwat. The disaster has impacted 72 districts, 388 subdistricts, 2,305 villages, and 106,280 farmers. A total of 6,525,056 animals, including cattle, buffalo, pigs, goats/sheep, and poultry, have been affected across 7,213.40 rai of pasture land.
During this emergency, the department has distributed 156,740 kilograms of royal animal feed, evacuated 27,512 animals, and provided 459 animal health promotion kits. Survival kits for animals have also been supplied, and mobile veterinary units have been dispatched to offer continuous care in at-risk areas. The flood has resulted in the loss of 583 animals, including cattle, goats, sheep, and native chickens, across five provinces.
This mission aligns with directives from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Colonel Thammanat Prompao, who underscores the importance of proactive measures in dealing with natural disasters. The focus remains on prevention, mitigation, and recovery strategies.
