Bangkok: The Department of Medical Services and the Department of Land Transport have taken a significant step to assist disabled individuals who have suffered injuries from road accidents by donating essential assistive devices. This initiative aims to enhance their quality of life and enable them to live and work similarly to able-bodied individuals.
According to Thai News Agency, the collaboration involves three key agencies: the Department of Medical Services, the Department of Land Transport, and the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health. This effort follows a memorandum of understanding to allocate funds for assistive devices specifically for road accident victims. The initiative seeks to develop a model for providing these devices and ultimately improve the quality of life for the disabled.
Dr. Natthapong Wongwiwat, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, emphasized the collaborative nature of this project, which is facilitated through the Sirindhorn National Institute for Medical Rehabilitation. The initiative is part of a broader goal to support disabled individuals in living and working as independently as possible.
Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, highlighted that the Road Safety Fund has consistently been utilized to support this cause. Revenue from the auction of vehicle license plates has funded the provision of assistive devices for 15 years, benefiting over 20,000 individuals. In the 2025 fiscal year alone, 1,061 individuals nationwide received assistance, with 63 assessments and approvals in Bangkok. The provided devices include wheelchairs, electric wheelchair trailers, pressure sore prevention cushions, prosthetic limbs, and medical equipment like oxygen concentrators and electric adjustable beds.
The initiative underscores the importance of not only preventing road accidents but also providing necessary care and rehabilitation. This support helps individuals with disabilities reintegrate into their daily lives and work environments, contributing to a compassionate and sustainable society in Thailand.
Dr. Chalermpol Chairat, Director of the Sirindhorn National Institute for Medical Rehabilitation, announced plans to expand the project's reach in fiscal year 2026. This expansion will ensure greater access to necessary assistive devices, further alleviating suffering and enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities due to road accidents. Applications for support can be submitted at provincial transport offices nationwide.
