Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsi has directed the National Water Resources Management Committee to closely monitor the flooding situation in Nan Province, urging that Cell Broadcast systems issue warnings at least one day in advance to provide the public with ample time to prepare.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Songsak, alongside Mr. Chayant Muangsong, Secretary-General of the National Water Resources Office, chaired a meeting focused on the flood situation in the Nan River basin. Post-meeting, Mr. Songsak emphasized that while water levels are receding, the priority now is on recovery and relief operations for the affected residents. The Ministry of Transport has been tasked with expediting the survey of damaged infrastructure, and the Provincial Electricity Authority is working to restore power to the affected customers. Currently, 42,539 electricity users have been impacted, with power restored to 37,536, leaving 5,003 still without electricity.
The intense rainfall in Nan Province, particularly in Pua District, has resulted in accumulated rainfall of 380 mm, leading to flash floods and river overflows affecting four districts: Pua, Thawang Pha, Phu Piang, and Santi Suk. Pua District has been notably hard hit, impacting 60 villages and over 8,000 households, with landslides reported in several areas.
With technology enabling better forecasting, heavy rainfall is predicted again from August 27th to 30th. Current reports indicate that water levels in Mueang district are stabilizing but require ongoing monitoring and preventive measures.
Mr. Songsak highlighted the necessity of timely alerts, stating that while Cell Broadcast is a crucial notification channel, the main concern is issuing alerts quickly enough for the public to prepare. This involves forecasting and possibly issuing alerts 5, 10, or even just 1 day in advance to mobilize relevant government agencies for targeted assistance.
