Drones to Investigate Severe Water Degradation at Bueng Si Fai Lake

Phichit: The Pollution Control Department is mobilizing drone technology to pinpoint pollution sources in Bueng Si Fai Lake following alarming discoveries of severe water degradation at the lake's center.

According to Thai News Agency, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment has mandated an urgent investigation and restoration plan for the lake, located in Phichit Province. Water quality assessments have classified the center of Bueng Si Fai Lake as Category 5, indicating a critical level of degradation. The use of drones is aimed at conducting a comprehensive survey to identify pollution sources and facilitate precise corrective actions.

Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, expressed his concern over the deteriorating water quality at Bueng Si Fai, a vital natural water source and tourist spot in the province. He has tasked the Pollution Control Department with immediate monitoring, pollution source identification, and collaboration with relevant local agencies to expedite water quality restoration.

The Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, Dr. Surin Worakitthamrong, noted that continuous water quality monitoring by the Environmental and Pollution Control Office Region 4 has been ongoing at five sites around the lake throughout the 2026 fiscal year. Data from the past three quarters highlight a troubling trend towards Category 5 water quality at the lake's center (BS05), underscoring the urgency of identifying pollution causes and implementing remedial measures.

In response, the Pollution Control Department has planned a field survey for August 11, 2026, utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to investigate land use and surrounding areas of Bueng Si Fai Lake. This operation is supported by drone pilots from the Phichit Provincial Administrative Organization and is conducted in partnership with the Phichit Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment, Phichit Municipality, and local administrative bodies.

Dr. Surin emphasized that the aerial survey data, combined with water quality test results, will be pivotal in identifying pollution sources. This integrated approach aims to inform effective measures for the lake's water quality restoration, ensuring efficient and sustainable management of this critical water resource.
