Trang: Dugongs from Koh Libong were recently observed, with one found entangled in rope during a routine survey by the Marine National Park Study and Research Center 3 (Trang Province). According to Thai News Agency, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, a drone survey revealed four dugongs in generally good health, though one remains a concern due to the rope entanglement. Officials are actively monitoring the situation. Mr. Jinda Srisuppatpong, Director of the Marine National Park Management Division, shared that the survey was conducted in the Hua Laem area of the Libong Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, Trang Province. A total of four dugongs were found in good physical condition, but one required attention due to the rope fragments tangled in its fin. Despite the situation, all dugongs are reportedly eating normally, and a team is set to continue monitoring them. Mr. Chutipong Polawat, Head of the Marine National Park Study and Research Center 3, reported that on February 15th, officials utilized drone technolog y during high tide to observe the dugongs' behavior and health. The survey highlighted four dugongs displaying natural behaviors such as swimming and surfacing. Their Body Condition Score was 3/5, with a normal respiratory rate, observed under clear weather conditions. However, a significant issue was noted: one dugong had rope pieces tangled around both fins. Initial observations showed it could still swim and feed on seagrass normally, retreating to deeper areas during low tide to forage. Mr. Chinda emphasized that the Department of National Parks is addressing the dugong's situation. The Marine National Park Research and Study Center 3 has been instructed to coordinate with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources' veterinary team and field staff for continuous monitoring. The goal is to assess risks and find appropriate solutions to prevent survival threats or serious injuries. Source: Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
