EGAT Confirms Earthquake in Tak Poses No Threat to Dams

Tak: Today (November 18) at 9:36 a.m. (Thailand time), an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Ban Na Subdistrict, Sam Ngao District, Tak Province. The epicenter was located at latitude 17.4360 degrees north and longitude 98.5600 degrees east, with a depth of 1 km. The tremor’s epicenter was approximately 48.81 km northwest of Bhumibol Dam and at varying distances from other key dams in the region, including Mae Chang, Sirikit, Vajiralongkorn, Srinakarin, Ratchaprapha, and Bang Lang Dams.

According to Thai News Agency, measurements from ground acceleration devices indicated that Bhumibol Dam registered the highest value of 0.00277 g. Other dams recorded lower values: Mae Chang Dam at 0.00122 g, Sirikit Dam at 0.00003 g, Vajiralongkorn Dam at 0.00045 g, Srinakarin Dam at 0.00038 g, Ratchaprapha Dam at 0.00025 g, and Bang Lang Dam at 0.00004 g.

The Electric Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has assured that the earthquake does not compromise the structural integrity of Bhumibol Dam or any of the other dams mentioned. This reassurance comes after thorough assessments confirming that the seismic activity has no impact on the stability and safety of these crucial infrastructure elements.
