Bangkok: Chaos erupted in Kosovo's parliament when opposition lawmakers threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a parliamentary session. The incident was a protest against delays in forming a government and appointing a new Speaker of the House of Representatives.
According to Thai News Agency, the turmoil began after Prime Minister Kurti addressed parliament, explaining the need for more time to negotiate with other political parties for the selection of a Speaker following the recent general election in June. Immediately after his speech, Teeme Kadrijaj, a female MP from an allied opposition party, retrieved eggs from her handbag and hurled at least four at Kurti, exclaiming, "How shameful!" Security personnel and other MPs quickly intervened to protect the Prime Minister, prompting the presiding officer to cut the live broadcast and temporarily suspend the session. Kurti was unharmed and later remarked that if being hit with eggs was the cost of negotiations, he was willing to accept it.
This incident highlights the ongoing political deadlock in this small Balkan nation, which has persisted for nearly two years. Kurti and his party emerged victorious in the snap elections in June but did not achieve the two-thirds majority necessary to elect a new parliamentary speaker and president. This situation has compelled him to enter into intense negotiations with opposition parties, though no agreement has been reached. As the constitutional deadline for forming a parliament expired on August 7th, opposition politicians have threatened legal action against Kurti's attempts to stall, raising the possibility of new elections in Kosovo.
