Bangkok: Ekaniti affirms that the welfare card criteria will bring 2.3 million "genuinely poor" people into the system-cracking down on "fraudsters and fake poor people."
According to Thai News Agency, Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, discussed the state welfare card program's focus on helping truly impoverished individuals. He mentioned the potential extension of the appeals period and actions against groups exploiting villagers' identities. During his overseas assignments, Ekniti learned about issues related to the welfare card and emphasized the need to screen eligible recipients to ensure funds reach those who need them most. This initiative aims to update the data, which has not been refreshed for over 4-5 years, thereby including over 2.3 million previously overlooked individuals genuinely in need.
Mr. Ekanit highlighted that the process has exposed Thailand's outdated database system, which fraudsters exploit to misuse citizens' information for illegitimate purposes, such as registering as company directors or purchasing shares for tax deductions. This malpractice results in citizens losing their rights as their names become entangled in business systems. Ekanit assured that the authorities will tackle this issue decisively while also assisting affected citizens. Plans are in place to facilitate appeals, making the criteria more flexible, and to establish a One-Stop Service center with the Ministry of Interior to review the eligibility of distressed citizens.
Additionally, Ekniti stressed that the state welfare card is just one part of the government's assistance. Citizens continue to have access to over 72 other government welfare benefits, including allowances for the elderly and disabled, as well as educational welfare. All suggestions will be considered in committee meetings for further revision of the criteria.
