Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has firmly denied allegations that it was complicit in collusion involving reserve senators during the national election. The ECT has emphasized its commitment to swiftly addressing any collusion cases presented.
According to Thai News Agency, the ECT office released a statement in response to accusations made by Mr. Akkarawat Pongthanachalitkul, a reserve senator, and Pol. Col. Manas Nakornsri, an election inspector from Samut Prakan province. The complaint, directed at the chairman of the coordinating committee of the opposition parties, alleged that the ECT neglected its responsibilities.
The allegations included a failure by the ECT to handle candidate lists or documents appropriately on the day of the Senate election, allowing candidates to have their information within the polling venue, and neglecting their duty to oversee the election process. These claims were further amplified by provincial election inspectors who suggested that there were collusion schemes for the Senate election, all of which the ECT has categorically denied.
The ECT has issued three press releases to clarify these matters, emphasizing their commitment to impartiality and fairness. In a related development, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases dismissed a lawsuit on January 28, 2025, against the ECT. This lawsuit, filed by reserve senators, alleged violations of official duties and other acts related to the election process. The ECT has confirmed its intention to expedite the review of related complaints to uphold electoral integrity.
