Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has put forward two possible electricity rates for the start of next year, suggesting either a fixed rate of 3.94 baht per unit or a marginal increase to 4.58 baht per unit. This proposal comes in light of reduced costs and the strengthening of the baht.
According to Thai News Agency, the ERC’s consideration of these rates for the January-April 2026 period is driven by a decline in key energy costs, particularly the global market prices for natural gas, in addition to the baht’s appreciation against the dollar. These factors contribute to a downward trend in electricity tariffs.
Mr. Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, Secretary-General of the ERC, highlighted that the reduction in energy costs has allowed for the electricity price to remain stable. This situation also offers additional opportunities to alleviate the fuel cost burden for the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and PTT. The ERC plans to conduct a public hearing via its website from November 10-23, 2025, before making an official announcement.
The ERC has been gradually addressing the outstanding fuel debt owed to EGAT and PTT, which originally totaled over 12.2 billion baht. This has led to a significant reduction of the outstanding balance, now approximately 47 billion baht. Although this amount is still substantial, it continues to impact the calculation of FT rates until the fuel burden is entirely settled.
