Bangkok: The Excise Department has issued a warning to pensioners about scams involving fraudsters impersonating officials to deceive them into transferring money from their accounts.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Nittaya Sorikul, Deputy Director-General and spokesperson for the Excise Department, has revealed that fraudsters are currently impersonating officials from the department. These scammers are making phone calls to pensioners, persuading them to join a LINE group called “Pensions.” Once in the group, pensioners are encouraged to install applications that claim to be from a government agency. These applications are then used unlawfully to access personal and financial information and to transfer money out of the victims’ accounts.
The Excise Department spokesperson emphasized that the department does not contact pensioners by phone or solicit them via personal or group LINE accounts regarding heirship rights or to request the installation of additional applications. The department also does not request bank account information or conduct any transactions via phone. Pensioners receiving such contact should immediately cease all communication with the impostors.
The department advises individuals who encounter any suspicious activity that might be fraudulent, or those who wish to verify the identity of an Excise Department official, to contact the Human Resources Management Division at the Excise Department. They can be reached at telephone number 0 2241 5600-18 ext. 542401, 542431, or through any Regional or Area Excise Office nationwide. This verification process is crucial in preventing potential harm.
The Excise Department urges pensioners and the public to remain vigilant and not be deceived by criminal groups impersonating department officials. The department also requests cooperation in spreading this warning to protect family members and loved ones from becoming victims of such scams.
