Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice has projected that the extradition process for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is likely to be finalized by June. This announcement comes as part of the broader framework established under the Royal Decree on Amnesty 2026, aimed at releasing individuals from probation.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Pongsawat Neelayothin, the Permanent Secretary, discussed the developments concerning Thaksin's release. She highlighted that a committee formed under Section 21 of the Royal Decree will oversee the process. This committee will include the Governor of Bangkok, the Provincial Public Prosecutor, and the prison commander. While the guidelines stipulate that the process should not exceed 120 days, the actual timeline will vary based on the readiness of individual provincial prisons. The amnesty is expected to benefit over 10,000 individuals across the nation.
Ms. Pongsawat further elaborated on the procedural details, noting that a certificate of innocence will be issued following the committee's meeting. For Thaksin Shinawatra, this process is under the jurisdiction of the Thonburi Court. Once he receives the certificate, he can apply for release from probation, thereby concluding the process. Ms. Pongsawat expressed confidence that the procedures would be completed by June, indicating that all necessary steps are being adhered to systematically.
