Bangkok: A story circulating on social media claims that strawberries are a miracle cure for the elderly, particularly for enhancing brain and heart health. The story suggests that consuming strawberries can significantly benefit individuals aged 65 and older in these areas.
According to Thai News Agency, while there is some truth to the claims, they should not be taken at face value. Verified by Asst. Prof. Dr. Prae Charoenwuthipong from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kasetsart University, the notion that strawberries are a "miracle cure" is misleading. Although strawberries are rich in nutrients, they are not intended to treat, cure, or prevent diseases like actual medicines.
The research supporting the claims about strawberries and health benefits is based on scientific studies. Observational studies indicate that consuming about two servings of fruits and vegetables daily may reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Berries, including strawberries, have been noted for their high antioxidant activity. Additionally, intervention studies have shown positive health trends when participants included strawberries in their diet, observing improvements in blood lipid levels, blood sugar, and blood pressure.
Strawberries offer significant nutritional value, rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and various minerals and phytochemicals beneficial for cardiovascular health. However, strawberries are not the only source of these nutrients. If accessibility or cost is an issue, senior citizens can opt for Thai fruits with similar nutritional profiles, such as mulberries and other common Thai fruits rich in vitamin C and dietary fiber.
It is important for the elderly to consume fruit in moderation due to natural sugars and energy content. Those with diabetes should be particularly cautious. Proper washing techniques are also advised to reduce pesticide residue on strawberries, including rinsing under running water, soaking in vinegar or salt water, and using heat treatment.
In conclusion, while strawberries are beneficial, they are not a comprehensive solution for health issues. A balanced diet from all food groups, combined with exercise and adequate rest, is crucial for elderly care. Caution should be exercised against exaggerated online claims.
