Female Courier Uncovers Meth Smuggling Operation Hidden in Tamarind Paste

Bangkok: A female delivery person working between Thailand and Japan uncovered a methamphetamine smuggling operation when she discovered crystal meth hidden inside a jar of tamarind paste. Bang Yi Khan police seized over 2.059 kilograms of methamphetamine after the courier became suspicious of a package she was hired to deliver. Authorities are now investigating to identify and prosecute the individual who employed her services.

According to Thai News Agency, on July 13, 2026, at approximately 2:00 PM, beneath a building in the Pinklao area, Police Lieutenant Colonel Mangkon Panthurasri reported that during questioning, Ms. Patcharanan admitted to her role as a smuggler of goods between Thailand and Japan. She revealed that a Facebook user named "Chayamin Pai" contacted her on July 3, hiring her to transport goods from Thailand to Japan. Subsequently, she arranged for a delivery rider to take the package to her residence on July 4.

Ms. Patcharanan opened the package on July 7 while preparing for her trip and discovered six jars of tamarind paste, which seemed unusually heavy. Upon closer inspection, she found a white object concealed beneath the tamarind paste in a clear plastic bag. After this discovery, she restored the contents to their original state and traveled to Japan, later returning to Thailand on July 11 to report the incident to the police.

On July 13, officers examined the package and confirmed the presence of methamphetamine hidden in each jar, totaling approximately 2.059 kilograms, with each block weighing between 300-413 grams. A drug test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine. Police confiscated the items as evidence and filed charges against those involved for possession and sale of a Category 1 narcotic without permission, as well as distributing it for commercial purposes.

The police have begun questioning the complainant and witnesses, including the delivery rider, and are accelerating their efforts to trace the Facebook account user and others involved in the operation to ensure they face legal consequences.

Police Colonel Athiwat Nuchthaworn, Superintendent of Bang Yi Khan Police Station, has tasked the investigation team with expediting efforts to uncover the drug trafficking network involved in this case. The goal is to prosecute all masterminds and networks decisively.

Recently, Bang Yi Khan police issued arrest warrants for four suspects, comprising three Thai nationals and one Vietnamese national. Authorities suspect there could be approximately 15 more individuals involved in the operation. The investigation team, led by Police Major General Teeradet Thammasuthee, is working diligently to apprehend all perpetrators.
